PEER North Medical Conference
Hybrid - Yellowknife, NWT & Online
September 22, 2022 - September 24, 2022
On Sept 22 – 24, 2022 the 1st Annual PEER North conference was hosted in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories through a partnership between the Northwest Territories Medical Association, the PEER Evidence team, and the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) PracticeNWT team. The goal of PEER North is to provide a culturally relevant educational forum, for the purpose of connecting and strengthening relationships amongst Northern healthcare providers around current, evidence-based, primary care topics of interest. During the #PEERNorth22 conference, attendees took part in an engaging and uplifting Medicine Walk with three well-respected elders, Lila Fraser Erasmus, Rassi Nashalik, and Felix Lokhart. Attendees spent time on the land, connecting to the knowledge-keepers’ stories to learn an alternate way of communicating on this deep-dive into cultural competency within healthcare. The PEER Evidence team hosted an interactive pre-conference Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) workshop along with multiple entertaining sessions throughout the weekend. Speakers from across Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon provided a northern lens on primary health care topics that were engaging for nurses, nurse practitioners, family physicians, pharmacists, students, medical residents, and allied health professionals. The past president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), Katherine Smart, spoke to the group about the lessons learned in medical leadership over the last few years and the future direction of the CMA. PracticeNWT hosted a social event for this long overdue get-together, with a distinctly northern venue, fabulous food, and boat tours of Yellowknife Bay to see the famous houseboats! The Northern lights even came out in celebration of the event. Building on the success of PEER North 2022, planning is already underway for PEER North 2023 in Yellowknife.
